Since 1987
History Our Journey
A branch of GKBJ (parent church founded 1952) rooted in Taman Kencana since 1987 — a journey of faith, ministry, and love in the heart of West Jakarta.
Year 1952
The Origin of GKBJ
Born from a vision to serve the Hakka-speaking community in Jakarta
In 1952, about 20 members departed from Gereja Yesus Kristus in Pasar Bulan with a vision to plant a new congregation that would minister in the Hakka (Khek) language. At that time, Hakka-speaking churches were very few, while the Hakka population in Jakarta reached around 150,000 people.
Led by Jong Tjie Njuk, Peter Sim, and several others, the first worship service was held on 7 September 1952 at 1:00 PM with 28 attendees at Gereja Pemberita Injil, Jalan Kemurnian V No. 35 — borrowing the building, hymnals, Bibles, and piano from that church for an entire year.
On 5 October 1952, Rev. Ernest Loong from Hong Kong preached a sermon titled "Christians Shining as Stars in the World" (Philippians 2:12–16) that made a deep impression and confirmed the direction of this new congregation's ministry.
Through a series of meetings and prayer, Jong Tjie Njuk and Peter Sim invited Rev. Ernest Loong to become the first pastor, and he accepted the call after prayerful, faith-filled consideration.

The word "Baptist" was adopted because Rev. Ernest Loong was a missionary from Baptist Mid Mission, a Baptist mission agency headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Under Rev. Loong's leadership and the dedication of the early congregation, ministry grew rapidly — from simple worship in a borrowed space to a strong community grounded in worship, discipleship, and evangelism deeply rooted in God's Word.
Year 1987
The Taman Kencana Branch
GKBJ Taman Kencana was established in 1987 as a branch of Gereja Kristen Baptist Jakarta (GKBJ), the parent church that itself was founded in 1952.
This branch was planted to reach and serve the Christian community around Taman Kencana, Cengkareng, West Jakarta — starting with a small group of members longing for a spiritual home faithful to God's Word.
Holding to biblical Reformed faith, this church has grown into a community that loves the Lord and one another.
