The Basics
What is a Baptist church?
A Baptist church is a Protestant Christian church. We believe in the triune God, in Jesus Christ as the only Savior, and in the Bible as the Word of God. The name "Baptist" comes from the conviction that most distinguishes this tradition: who should be baptized, and how.
If you have never been to a Baptist church and wonder how it differs from others, these three things are the plainest answer we can give.

Local church autonomy
Each Baptist congregation governs itself under Christ's headship, led by qualified pastors and deacons rather than by an outside hierarchy.

The authority of Scripture
The Bible — 66 books of the Old and New Testaments — is the inspired Word of God and our only supreme authority for faith and Christian living.
Because baptism is given to those who confess faith, Baptist churches do not baptize infants. That does not mean children are overlooked — quite the opposite. Children are taught, cared for and prayed for in Sunday School, and we look forward to the day they confess faith for themselves and ask to be baptized. Baptism, as we understand it, is a person's own answer to God rather than something inherited.

Our Theology
What makes a church Reformed Baptist?
We are a Reformed Baptist church — another name often used for this family of churches is Particular Baptist. The meaning is straightforward: Baptist in our understanding of baptism and church order, Reformed in our understanding of salvation.
The starting point is the Five Solas, five statements that came out of the Reformation and still serve as our compass today.

The doctrines of grace
We believe salvation is entirely the work of God's grace. Fallen humanity cannot save itself; the sovereign God chooses His people, Christ died to redeem them, and the Holy Spirit calls and keeps them to the end. This is what is commonly called the doctrines of grace. For us it is not a cold debate but a reason for gratitude: if salvation depended on our own strength, we would have nothing to lean on.
Expository preaching
In practice this theology is felt most from the pulpit. We preach expositionally: the biblical text is read, explained according to its own meaning, and then applied to the life of the congregation — rather than gathering verses to support a theme decided in advance. Often we work through a book of the Bible chapter by chapter, so the congregation hears the whole of Scripture and not only the comfortable parts.
We say all of this with respect for fellow believers from other traditions. Many churches in Indonesia love Christ sincerely with emphases different from ours. This page explains who we are; it is not a verdict on anyone else. The full details are on our What We Believe page.
Our Emphases
How are you different from other churches in West Jakarta?
West Jakarta is blessed with many good churches, and we feel no need to measure ourselves against any of them. What we can tell you honestly is where our own emphases lie, so that you can judge for yourself whether this church is a fit for you and your family.
First, expository Bible teaching. The sermon is the longest part of our service, and its content is an explanation of the biblical text. If you are looking for a church where you go home each week understanding one passage of Scripture better than before, you will feel at home here.
Second, small-group community. Sunday worship is the centre, but congregational life does not stop there. Small-group fellowship in members' homes is where people know one another by name, pray for one another, and help one another through the hard weeks. A large gathering becomes small and warm through a community like this.
Third, discipleship. Our aim is not to fill seats on Sunday but to help people grow more like Christ across a lifetime — through teaching classes, personal shepherding and biblical counselling. Discipleship runs across every age, from children's Sunday School to our older members.

Identity & History
Serving Cengkareng since 1987
GKBJ Taman Kencana was founded in 1987 as a branch congregation of Gereja Kristen Baptis Jakarta (GKBJ), which itself was founded in 1952. That means the Baptist ministry we have inherited has been at work in this city for more than seven decades, and in Cengkareng for nearly four.
From the beginning this church has been set inside a residential neighbourhood — not a grand building on a main road, but a place among our neighbours' homes. That has shaped our character: a church that knows its members one by one and is present in the everyday life of West Jakarta.

Is there a Baptist church in West Jakarta?
Yes. GKBJ Taman Kencana is a Reformed Baptist church meeting at Perumahan Taman Kencana Blok A1 No. 16, Cengkareng, West Jakarta 11730. We have served here since 1987 as a branch of GKBJ, founded in 1952, and our congregation comes from Cengkareng, Kalideres, Grogol Petamburan, Kembangan, Kebon Jeruk and Tangerang.

A Reformed Baptist church — also called Particular Baptist — is a Baptist church that holds Reformed theology: the Five Solas (Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria) and the doctrines of grace, the conviction that salvation from beginning to end is God's work rather than human achievement. In practice this shows up in expository preaching that works through the Bible book by book, chapter by chapter.
Do Baptist churches baptize infants?
No. Baptist churches baptize those who are able to personally confess faith in Christ, because that is what we understand Scripture to teach. Children are still welcomed, taught and prayed for through our Sunday School, and they may be baptized later when they confess faith for themselves.
What time are Sunday services?
Sunday services at GKBJ Taman Kencana are held at 07:30, 09:30 and 11:30 WIB. Teen worship is at 07:30 and children's Sunday School at 09:30. No registration is needed — anyone is welcome to come.
